Plastics for hydraulics and harbour construction

Extremely resistant materials and components are essential in hydraulic engineering and harbour construction. Depending on the application, they may need to withstand corrosive salt water, strong UV radiation and high mechanical stresses. We offer plastics that are designed specifically for these demanding requirements. They are used, for instance, in the construction of powerful locks and resistant fenders right across the world, from the Panama Canal to Venice.

Product examples

Fenders

Mounted on fender systems, sliding sheets made of our material Polystone® M (PE-UHMW) protect quay bulkheads and ships during mooring and harbour manoeuvring and during idle periods. The ready-to-mount sheets are characterized by high abrasion and wear resistance and are resistant to corrosion, UV radiation and weathering.

Slide elements for lock gates

In locks steel gates weighing tonnes have to be moved quickly and reliably. Thanks to their excellent slide properties, special slide rails made of our material Polystone® M slide (PE-UHMW) allow gates to be moved reliably with little use of energy. Slide rails made of Röchling materials are used in lock systems everywhere, from the Panama Canal to Venice.

Durostone® fasteners

Durostone® fasteners are particularly resistant to corrosive salt water and are very UV and weather-resistant. They are used in hydraulic engineering and harbour construction applications such as sea water desalination plants.

Fish screen installations

Two-part U-profiles made from Polystone® P grey (PP) are used in a fish screen installation for a power station. To keep fish away from the intake station for the cooling water, they are driven away by electric shocks if they swim into an electric field in front of the pipe. The U-profiles fix the required electric cables to the base of the cooling water pipe. More information about Polystone® P (PP)
