Mass balancing
Mass-balanced bioplastics

Mass-balanced bioplastics

Part of our Röchling-BioBoom® product family are mass-balanced bioplastics. To this end, we have already had several sites certified according to the international ISCC PLUS standard. ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) is one of the world’s leading certification schemes for the use of bio-based and recycled raw materials.

Promoting bio-based raw materials

With mass-balanced bioplastics, you promote the use of bio-based raw materials and reduce the use of fossil raw materials.

Trust proven properties

Mass-balanced bioplastics have the same properties as comparable plastics which are purely fossil-based. Thanks to that, you can rely on proven material properties and increase sustainability in your application.

Use established processes

The same well-established technical facilities and processes as for purely fossil-based materials can be used to process mass-balanced bioplastics.

Increase transparency

A key element of ISCC PLUS certified mass-balanced bioplastics is the high level of transparency. The use of the bio-based raw material must be documented throughout the entire supply chain. All companies along the value chain have to be certified, starting with the raw material producer. This creates the seamless traceability that trust is based on. We have already had several of our sites certified in accordance with ISCC PLUS by an independent certification company. Only raw materials from ISCC PLUS-certified manufacturers are used to manufacture our ISCC PLUS mass-balanced plastic products.

ISCC PLUS

ISCC PLUS is one of the world’s leading certification schemes for the use of bio-based and recycled raw materials. ISCC stands for International Sustainability & Carbon Certification. Companies from various industries worldwide can be certified for the sustainable use of bio-based or recycled raw materials according to ISCC. Further information: https://www.iscc-system.org/

How does mass balancing work?

+
1. Renewable and fossil raw materials are mixed and can no longer be separated.
2. Renewable raw materials in that way become thus part of some of the raw material purchasers’ products.
3. Companies that purchase ISCC Plus certified products therefore receive a product that can have been made from bio-based or fossil-based raw materials. In any case, however, they are credited with the bio-based raw material that was put into the system at the beginning. This is how it is balanced. In this way, the company has certified confirmation that its demand systematically promotes bio-based raw material.
+
• Mass balancing is comparable to the use of renewable energy.
• When choosing electricity from renewable sources, the electricity that is actually used cannot be traced back to a specific source. This means there is no way of telling whether the electricity was generated by a wind turbine or a coal-fired power plant. However, the share of renewable energies in the market is always promoted.

Lifecycle

Every product consumes resources and has an environmental impact. Sustainability is not only a question of the raw material used, but also depends on factors such as use in the customer’s application, service life and end-of-life options. Considering these factors over the life cycle is crucial for assessing how sustainable a product is. This applies to any product made of any material. In this way, ecological, technical and economic advantages can be combined.
