Our History

100 Years of Plastics – 200 Years of Materials Expertise

Continuity in Times of Change

Responsible. Long-term. Sustainable. These are the qualities that characterize family-run companies, and the Röchling family is no exception. This family can be traced back to the 17th century. To this day, the family members are still part of the company’s history as the eighth generation of shareholders. They form part of the Advisory Board and set the strategic course of the international group together with external experts – which means that family origins continue to shape the future of the business. Across almost two centuries, the family has closely steered the company along its eventful journey from steel producer to system partner for integrated solutions. The family has consistently provided continuity amid change – and will continue to do so going forward.

The beginnings

The beginnings

In 1822, Friedrich Ludwig Röchling founded an international trade network with his coal-trading company, which became the basis for the family’s industrial activities.
His heirs Theodor, Ernst, Carl and Fritz Röchling shifted the company’s focus to industrial steel production by purchasing Völklingen Ironworks. After the death of his brothers, Carl assumed sole responsibility, making far-sighted decisions that ensured both success and growth for the company.

First investments in plastics

First investments in plastics

Around 100 years after the foundation of the company, which had grown considerably in the meantime, the family made a strategically important investment. The Röchlings gradually acquired shares in Berliner Holzveredelung GmbH until, in 1921, they owned the entire company and thus the patent for the then completely new material Lignostone – the first plastic made from renewable raw materials and still a successful Röchling product today.

Portfolio diversification

Portfolio diversification

In the wake of the coal and steel crisis of the 1960s and 1970s, Röchling diversified its portfolio and acquired a variety of different shareholdings. At the same time, the sale of Völklingen Ironworks in 1978 marked the beginning of Röchling’s withdrawal from the steel industry. Shortly afterwards, in the 1980s, the company invested in new markets by acquiring further plastics companies from a wide range of industrial sectors, including in particular the automotive industry.

Focus: competence in plastics

Focus: competence in plastics

2006 was an important milestone in the history of the Röchling Group. The company sold the last of its shareholdings that were not related to plastics, thus bringing its transformation into a pure plastics specialist to a successful close. In 2008, Röchling extended its existing focus on high-performance industrial and automotive plastics to medical technology plastics as a third line of business.
