What is special about Lignostone® laminated densified wood?

For Lignostone® selected red beech veneers from highest quality are used. The peeled veneers used for Lignostone® are subject to stringent quality specifications and come from sustainable forest management.

Thanks to the excellent conditions in Western Europe for growing beech within a period of around 120 years, top grades of this product from logs of suitable length felled in the right locations offer extremely
good homogeneity that enables them to withstand the extremely high electric stresses. In addition to its electrical strengths, due to its intact capillaries with continuous load-bearing fibres this material offers unsurpassed mechanical strength values, which depend on the direction of lamination and the densification.

Applications

Due to its special material properties, Lignostone® is mainly used as insulation material in transformer construction and as thermal insulation for tank supports in LNG and LPG vessels.

Transformer construction

Under the brand name Lignostone® Transformerwood® we offer you a laminated densified wood according to IEC 61061 for the construction of transformers.

Lignostone® conserves valuable resources

We only purchase rotary cut veneers for manufacturing Lignostone® from suppliers who are certified in accordance with the regulations of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) FSC® product chain. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) based in Bonn is an international non-profit organisation that promotes the environmentally friendly and economically viable management of forests. For this purpose, it has developed standards based on which companies can be certified.

FSC® chain of custody certification ensures that the products of certified companies are made from responsibly sourced raw materials. For this purpose, companies have to streamline their processes and procedures in such a way that the traceability of the raw materials used is ensured and that statements can be made regarding the raw materials used in the product.

Laminated Densified - Wood From invention to worldwide use

Invention

Invention

In 1915, the engineers Fritz and Hermann Pfleumer succeeded in turning ordinary wood into a new material having remarkable properties. The patent "Treatment of Lumber to Increase its Density" granted in 1916 forms the starting point for the Röchling Group's plastic activities.

The patent as a starting point

On 17 May 1916, the „Treatment of Lumber to Increase its Density" they developed was patented. However, many more years of research and further development were required to exploit the full potential of the new material and establish the so-called Lignostone® on the market.

Remarkable properties

Remarkable properties

When Lignostone® is manufactured, strong compression results in a profound change in the structure of the wood without damaging the material. The cell walls remain intact and the cell fibres have been felted. Lignostone® is therefore extremely hard and resistant to splitting.
This is also reflected in the Lignostone® brand name, which is made up of the Latin word for wood "lignum“ and the English word "stone“.

Research

When the Lignostone® production was not yet fully developed,
in the first half of the 1920s, intensive work was conducted to improve the process. Several types of wood were tested to determine which were the most suitable for manufacturing Lignostone®.

Products and applications

Products and applications

In the 1920s, Lignostone was a welcome alternative to fine woods and was primarily used in buttons and parts for weaving machines, such as weaving shutters, but also in luxury joinery work. In the 1930s, the extremely resistant material also found areas of application in mechanical engineering. Springs, gears and hammers, for instance, were made of Lignostone.

Mechanical engineering

Since the 1930s, Lignostone products have increasingly been used outside of the textile sector. Springs, gears, bearing shells and bearing housings were manufactured especially for mechanical engineering, the textile industry remained an important customer, however.

Lignostone® Transformerwood® für Transformatoren

Lignostone® Transformerwood® für Transformatoren

The manufacturing process has been continuously improved and the laminated densified wood has been optimised. In the 1950s, Lignostone® was first used for insulation components in oil-filled high-voltage transformers by SIEMENS and quickly established as a reliable standard for oil-filled high-voltage transformers.

The homogeneity, uniform density and high-voltage resistant glued joints, in addition to the scientific findings on the electrical properties of Lignostone®, render it probably the most reliable laminated densified wood globally.

Lignostone® cryogenic as thermal insulation in the low temperature range

Lignostone® cryogenic is used globally as a proven, highly resilient material for thermal insulation - for instance as support bearings for tankers transporting liquefied gases such as LNG or LPG, for fuel tanks in LNG drives or support bearings for building pipelines. Shipyards such as Meyerwerft in Papenburg used Lignostone® for the construction of gas tankers as early as the 1980s. The material is particularly characterised by its extremely low water absorption and resulting minimal swelling.
