Access Cube - The revolution for CT-guided needle interventions

In CT (computed tomography)-guided punctures, needle-guided navigation is usually done in a trial & error free-hand method – however, this procedure is often inaccurate and therefore can lead to procedural time loss and increased radiation exposure , especially with double-oblique access routes. Furthermore, in particular by use of larger needles unintentional needle placement in critical anatomic structures may lead to complications.

In collaboration with Röchling Medical as a development partner, the Swiss Medical Templates AG has developed an innovative navigation system for the precise alignment of the needle in CT-guided punctures: the Access Cube. The system combines a navigation cube with intelligent planning software and provides an easy and yet precise navigation solution for CT-guided punctures. Designed to allow needles up to 10G it can be used for a large range of needle-based interventions. Complex procedures like accesses for drainage tubes, ablations and biopsies, even with difficult trajectories, can be performed with high accuracy and planning reliability. The system does not require long setup times and allows for quick adoption. Thus, Access Cube is set out to revolutionize CT-controlled interventions.

Areas of application of the Access Cube

Interventional oncology: Whether radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and microwave ablation, cryotherapy, laser-induced thermotherapy, irreversible electroporation or vertebroplasties – the Access Cube helps to access the target exactly and holds the entry device in place during the entire procedure.
Needle biopsies: With needle biopsies, the Access Cube not only helps to navigate the needle with millimeter precision, but also holds it in place after insertion. And since double-oblique access routes are just as easy to implement, you can really choose the access that is best for the patient.

How the Access Cube works*

The Access Cube is placed over the point of intervention, pressed lightly and finally fixed at the corners using the plasters.
The patient undergoes a regular spiral CT scan.
The Access Cube is automatically detected by the dedicated planning software. By using a virtual needle in the planning software, the optimal trajectory is determined through the Access Cube.
The coordinates calculated by the planning software guide the needle precisely by using the corners of the star holes on the Access Cube’s two planes.
The Access Cube is easily disassembled allowing free access to the needle.
